My new 85 has a cracked windshield that will not be able to pass my state inspection, so I'm going to have to replace it. My parts car has a good windshield that I can use, if I can successfully do a transplant.
Has anyone ever done a windshield replacement, or have advice to offer?
Thanks!

Many have tried (to remove the windshield intact), myself included. I don't personally know anyone that's suceeded. It can be done in theory, because glass companies have to be able to remove them. It might be safer to pay one to switch the glass from one car to the other...

I've done it several times on different rides. Use a guitar string that is ribbed. Get one person on the inside and another on the out side. Use a coat hanger to poke a hole through, then push the string through. Once the string is through the hole rap it around a small stick at both ends and just start pulling back and forth. You may have to re adjust the string when a section gets full of the black rubber. It take some time, but it does work

I replied to this on the car's thread. I'd say definately hire a pro. If you can't resist, I'd say this. A guitar string may work, I tried one like that with no luck many years ago. The original seal was dried too hard, and the string was no match for it. There is a windshield tool that would be easier. It all depends on the age of the rubber. Also, If it were heated, the seal might be softer. Doing it in the direct sunlight and using a hair dryer on the edges would make it easier. But again, I wouldn't try it!

I have done it several times very sucessfully, I have a tool with a handle and a 90 degree bent blade on the end, and thereis a cable and T handle attached near the base that you pull with one hand while steering the tool withthe main upright handle, if the car is in the sun it makes life a lot easier, and if you have a friend to help you it's even more so.
If it's not raining tomorrow I might post some photos of the tool and it in use.

You guys wouldn't be trying to talk me out of it now, would you???
If I'm gonna break my good windshield while getting it out of the parts car, then, whats the point?
This looks like a job for...

I quoted Safelite and it would cost close to 300 bucks to get the windshield replaced. So, its gonna cost as much for a windshield as the whole entire car cost.
I may just have to bite the bullet on this one and go ahead and hire it done.

$300 should buy you a new windshield, installed. FWIW, Safelite is almost always one of the more expensive companies in the business. I had a new windshield put in my EXP a few years ago for around $225, IIRC.
If you have to spend that much money, you might as well have a new one put in. Even though the one you have is intact, it is likely sandblasted and scratched to some degree. It's amazing how clear a new one is, or at least how readily you get used to the pitting and scratches on an old one...

I was referring to a new windshield. I guess I should have clarified that. Sorry.

Yeah I put a new one in my Turbo last year. I called probably 25- 30 people, I think it ended up being about $225 or so. I got a wide range of prices. I have to say, a new windshield really stands out more than you think. It's well worth the extra money for a new one. It makes the car look better and the drive feels like you're in a new car.

Well, I must say that I think you folks have convinced me that a new windshield is the only way to go.
Thanks for the help everybody!
